What is Gum Disease?
Gingivitis means inflammation of the gum tissue, which is caused by bacteria that forms on the teeth due to inadequate brushing or flossing. If left untreated, the inflammation from gingivitis can lead to the damage of the bone and attachment support of teeth. This attachment loss is known as periodontal disease, and can result in tooth loss.
Nearly 50% of the population has gum disease!
Based on 2009-2010 data analyzed by the CDC, it was estimated that 47.2% of adults (age 30+) had some form of periodontal disease (Thornton-Evans et al., 2013).
The Oral-Systemic Link
Research has found a link between oral and overall (systemic) health. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), studies have shown that individuals with gum disease are more likely to have heart disease, diabetes, or stroke (ADA, 2017).
Managing the infection and inflammation in your mouth improves your overall health and saves you money
Statistically significant cost reductions ($1,090-$5,681 annually) have been found for type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, coronary artery disease, and pregnancy when periodontal disease was treated (Jeffcoat et al., 2014).
